Creating Curves - part two

Hi, Trudi here from Quilting Prolifically. So last month I made a great start on my curves, not curves quilt.

18 of these Shoo Fly blocks done, and I was well on my way to getting the other 18 alternate blocks done too!

This second block is made up of nine patch of 4 1/2" squares.  Plain squares in the corners, and squares made with the Isosceles Triangle die, and 2 1/2" Half Square Triangles to make the center square in square block.

another set of 18 blocks are done.

Alternate the blocks in the lay out and hey presto  ... its starting to take shape!

I barely had enough space on my living room floor to lay this out, So to piece it, I gathered up the rows, stacking the blocks in order and taking them out to my sewing machine in my studio in the garden.

(one sure way to get your daily step quota up!)

As I pieced the rows, I laid them over the long arm, then pieced the rows together.

I've added a plain border, and this is now ready to quilt.

The curves are already visible in the pattern, and not one curve has been sewn.
I'm hoping that a little (ok, maybe a lot) of custom quilting in those areas will really enhance the curved effect.

Remember, this whole quilt, that is now 82" square, is made from scraps.  I did cut some yardage for the outer border and some of the white areas, but it is all a mish mash of white on whites and very low volume fabrics.

So if you have a large pile of scraps, and fancy making your own version of this quilt, these are the dies I used along with my Big Shot Plus

659838 Bigz Square 4 1/2"
659832 Bigz Half Square Triangle 4 1/2" pieced
659853 Bigz L Isosceles & Right 4 1/2" H
657611 Bigz Half Square Triangle 2 1/2" pieced

So, I'll be back next month with the full reveal of how the quilting can really make a difference to enhance those curves.  If your have a go at making thee blocks for your own Curves, Not Curves quilt, please tag me on social media, I'd love to see!

Cards - Positive and Negative Die Cuts

Happy Friday everyone, It's Anna posting today.
I think we all need "Birthday" cards at all time of year and... How many times have you set aside a die-cut shape? Take a tip from this project: I made the positive and negative die cut sentiments using Big Shot Plus and alphabet Alphanumeric.
I used both the die cut image and the card it was cut from to created these two cards.

From one die cut, I end up with 2 cards and each one of them with a specific technique.
Here is the first card I made:

Sizzix big shot Plus cards-title-diecut-titolo-alfabeto-fustelle-by cafecreativo (1)

The first card uses the negative image, that I cut out from white cardstock.

I glued a strip of floral paper to highlight the word, on the inside card. I stamped the word "birthday" to complete the card. I embellished with a cute daisy that I cut out with two dies (Botanical Bloom collection by Craft Asylum).
Here is the detail of the front of the card:

I carefully saved the insides of the letters to make my second card...

I mounted it in acetate paper: using the positive of my die cut I glued them back into place, above acetate strip. I created a small window on the front of the card and I attached the acetate.
I completed the card with a big cupcake (Echo Park collection).

The use of the negative and the positive parts of your die cuts in these 2 cards is simple and fast!

Buon week end, ci vediamo qui venerdì prossimo!

Half Hexagon cushion cover

As it's nearly September I've started thinking about back to school and off to Uni - and that I haven't managed to complete many of my half completed projects!
so I've combined off to Uni and finishing something, and made a cushion to brighten a student room.
These half hexagon friendship braids have been lying around for ages - obviously they were cut using the Big Shot and the Half Hexagon die - 660175 http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660175/sizzix-bigz-die-5-half-hex

So I cut some navy fabric stripes using the Big Shot Plus 660020http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660020/sizzix-big-shot-plus-machine-only-white-gray
and the 2 1/2" strip 658328 http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/658328/sizzix-bigz-xl-25-die-strips-2-1-2-wide , and used them to join 3 of the strips together -

I trimmed the top and bottom to make the edges straight and then just added a backing in the same navy to complete - I am going to insert a cushion pad and then slip stitch the edges together -

So I'm feeling pleased with myself - one less thing to finish
Next week might be back to school - or it might be a mystery quilt.
Until then have fun sewing.

657188:  Sizzix Bigz Die- Tiny Tabs & Tags

I worked this double page in my favorite color tones: sea green! I worked on a sea green color chart to make my future holidays pictures stand out! This is a good way to think ahead of sun & beach! It’s perfect for your mood!

I used my Sizzix dies as a finishing touch, for the decoration part. I used my favorite Bigz die which is the “Sizzix Bigz Die- Tiny Tabs & Tags” to cut a small tab out of blue paper. It is so easy to insert in a project and it can be cut in various material!

The die “Hello” is perfect to welcome me in this nice little town that is Cassis! I advise you to glue it with a spray can as this die is really thin!

Then we end the decoration part by inserting a pretty lace heart coming from the Big Shot Plus Starter Kit! We will make it stand out by gluing it with 3D foam adhesive.

Here are some pictures for you!

Have a nice day,

Karine

Let it Faux!

That's right folks, the terrible title puns are back! This week we are going to look at one of my favourite die-cutting techniques which is the art of faux embossing.

Faux is of course a French word meaning false or fake but there is nothing fake about the quality of the embossed effect on show today.

I am using dies from the Winter Wonderland range and as we stand on the cusp of September I can already detect a slight autumnal bite to the early morning air so I don't think it's too early to talk about Christmas cards?

The dies I have used today are.....

I started by die-cutting around a dozen snowflakes from card before attaching them to a piece of mount board using spray adhesive. Next I cut my deer using the Bigz die and primed it with white gesso, this forms a barrier to stop the acrylic paint being absorbed by the mount board.

I chose three different shades of red Distress Paint and painted my deer. Once the paint was dry ( I used a heat tool to speed this up)

I put a little dark brown paint onto my craft sheet before diluting it with water, I then painted this wash over the deer so that the paint settled in the cracks before dabbing the deer with kitchen paper to remove excess wash. The idea of the wash is to just leave it in and around the die-cut detail to add contrast.

The final step is to very delicately apply white chalky paint using a dry brush technique. Always start off with less than you think you will need and build it up slowly.

Before adding to the face of a simple white base card I wanted to create a craft card background. I applied Distress Inks around the edges before adding a couple of Christmas postmark stamps from Lily of the Valley. I scrunched up the card concentrating on the edges and attached a length of twine around one side finishing with a bow.

Here's the finished card, as I promised the embossed effect is pretty cool!

Next up is the bear, as you can see I used one of the Framelits Christmas tree dies to add the detail before applying them to the mount board.

I used two shades of grey and one of blue to get a little subtle contrast adding a dark wash before lifting it all with the dry brush work.

Again, here is the finished card, I DO love this die!

A slightly different spin, I am using both positive and negative die-cuts this time.

I chose a couple of shades of pink before using a deep red wash finishing off with the dry brush technique.

And last but not least.....

Hi! I'm Quim Díaz and I have a very ugly pencil case.

Hello everybody!

Holidays end, it's about time to return to school or work, and has come into my hands a very ugly pencil case!

I thought a few days on how to do something cute with it. Finally with a little chalk and paint, and  one of my favorite Big Shot Plus Starter Kit dies I can have a beautiful pencil case.

And if you want to see how ugly it was before, and do something similar, here you have a video tutorial where you can see how I did it.

Having Fun with Punches

Hello Sizzix fans!
Today I would like to show you how you can use the beautiful new Sizzix punches to create a beautiful card in only little time. I used two brand new punches on my card: the beautiful Butterfly Large and the Spiky Floral Medium punches.

Sizzix Supplies:

My card is actually rather simple. I attached two rectangles on a white cardstock card. After that, I cut out a tag with the largest die from the Framelits Tag Collection Dies and attached that onto the background. I then punched out four flowers with the Paper Punch Spiky Floral Medium and three butterfles with the lovely Paper Punch Butterfly Large

I inked the edges of the punched flowers and butterflies with brown ink to make them stand out more. I also added pearls to them for an elegant finishing touch. The sentiment 'Hello' was cut out with a wonderful Sizzix die from the Thinlits Happiness Phrases Dies.

The Sizzix punches are so much fun to use and they make it really easy to make a card in only little time. So I encourage you to get out your punches and have fun!

Thank you for stopping by!
Happy crafting!

In Dutch:
Hallo Sizzix fans!

Sizzix benodigdheden:

Eigenlijk is mijn kaart vrij simpel.

Craft Foam Stamps

Hi friends!

Craft Foam Stamps

Today we will use our Sizzix Big Shot Plus to make Craft Foam Stamps that we can use over any surface. I used stamps for printing on fabric, renewing a boring white cloth.

Craft Foam Stamps

You Need:

Cut Craft Foam with your Big Shot and the die chosen. Glue the shape onto cardboard using white glue, taking care to cover the surface well with glue for sticking it perfectly. Let dry.

Extend the fabric on the table covered with a plastic protection, distribute the paint on the stamp with a brush or sponge and put pressure with the stamp on the fabric. Let dry and iron to fix the paint following the maker's instructions.

To continue using a Foam Stamp, remove excess paint before saving. With the Foam Stamps can be customized fabric, paper and any type of material, using the proper paint. It is also a good entertainment for kids!

What do you think about this idea? Until next week with more original ideas for maximizing our Big Shot!
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Ciao amici!

 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Hola amigos!

Materiales
  • Nuestra Sizzix Big Shot
  • Troquel(Yo usé la Sizzix Bigz Die - Garden Greens)
  • cartón
  • goma eva
  • cola vinílica
  • pintura para tela
  • pincel
