The Magic of ecal

 by Pete Hughes

Just back from Paris where I was demonstrating all things 'Sizzix' at the SMAC trade show. I think I was the only Welshman in France on Saturday as Wales beat the French rugby team in Cardiff to win the Grand Slam....Hurray! I didn't make a fuss but I did have a smug grin for a few days after.

So 'What's this ecal business' I hear you cry. Well, it's the new software package which turns the Sizzix eclips electronic cutter into the most awesome creative craft tool on the planet. using ecal software your eclips can use any true type font on your PC including wingdings and dingbat fonts as well as allowing you to create and cut your own artwork.

Those amongst you who read my blog regularly will know that I am no great fan of technology so for me to fall in love with something like ecal is nothing short of a minor miracle, and at the same time, testament to how easy it is to get to grips with.

This is a project which I created in a little over 15 minutes, Using the keyboard I typed the 3 words needed in different fonts (screen 1), 'Happy' (creampuff font), 'Birthday' (Rustler font) and 'Sophie' (Channel font) then with the click of a button I welded the letters together. In screen 2 I adjusted the size of each word and overlapped them slightly. In screen 3 I selected all of the words and once again, welded them together.

In screen 4 I used one of the basic shapes included in the software, namely and oval to create a border frame. Once you draw the oval it's so easy to change the size and proportions to fit the artwork. In screen 5 I placed the oval around my text, carefully re-sized it and welded them together, again, with the simple click of a button. In screen 6 I added some flowers taken from the basic shapes menu and added them to my Text/frame.

In screen 7  I welded all of the elements together. once I was happy with the artwork I shrank it to fit my base card and clicked on the shadow feature which creates a shadow as a separate artwork (Screen 8) before moving the two elements into position, the screen shows a virtual cutting mat and represents where the shapes will cut on the real cutting mat in your eclips machine.
The first image below shows the paper that I have chosen trimmed to size and loaded onto my mat ready to be cut the second image shows the shapes after they have been cut on the eclips and the waste paper removed. All that is left to do is mount the artwork onto it's shadow and attach it all to the base card before adding a few adhesive gems
It really couldn't be any easier and the software is so simple to use, just by playing around for a while you can get some truly staggering results. The key to ecal is freedom; the freedom to use original bespoke designs, the freedom to use any true type font, but most of all the freedom to create your own little world.

Welcome to the Party!

Hello everybody,

For my third step-by-step on Sizzix blog, I wanted to celebrate with you a party I organized in the end of December for our children and their friends.
I created some decorations just for fun and they really loved them !
Every child could keep his rosette and little flags like a little gift.

Material :
You only need some sheets of paper, glue, wood's stick, some buttons, punches ,your Big Shot and these fantastic die !

For the rosettes :
Step 1 : Choose different patterned papers
For my 6 children I used 6 pieces of Hambly's paper. I cut them to 12x3.5 inches.

Step 2 : Use your Big Shot to create rosettes
Cut 6 rosettes and glue them delicately. You can add buttons and brads to embellish them.

Technique2

Step 3 : Print the names with your computer
You can use stamps or your favorite type. Cut the paper differently.Technique3

Technique4
Step 4 : Glue the rosettes
Yours rosettes are now ready, you can fix them with the wood. I only use a masking tape to fit together.
Technique5

Technique6
Technique7
For the little flags :
I use them just to decorate the chocolate's muffins. You just need little sheets of Hambly's patterned papers, wood's stick, glue and scissors.

Step 5 : Create colorful flags
You just need to cut rectangles. Put the wood with the glue in the middle of the paper and fold it.
Cut several flags for more fancy.

Technique9
Hope you like my decorations !
It's very easy to realize and you can create without lots of materials and very quickly!

Good morning everyone!

If you're not really a cardmaker like me, you find it difficult to create fun and pretty cards. Me? I just can't think cardmaking, I mean, I'm not that creative with cards.
But, Sizzix products have helped me and have inspired me to create more cards because it helps me think faster and easier.
For example, for this card, I just need paper stripes, glitter paper and one piece of paper size 4x6".

Simply glue your paper stripes on your 4x6" background.

Use this die into your glitter paper :

And simply mount this with 3D Foam tabs onto your paper stripped card!

Add a few embellishments and your card is ready to be sent to a dear friend! :)

Take care!

Last week we looked at some On the Edge projects and below are a few different ways to make the best of a single On the Edge die and features cards, envelopes, tags and invitations. The die used is Ornate by Tim Holtz (656626) I think it shows how versatile these dies can be and we haven't even talked about Mini albums.
While I remember; do you own a Vagabond machine, if so do you want some free goodies? silly question, we ALL want free goodies, right, All you need to do is follow this link...

...And Upload a picture of your Vagabond, I seem to have misplaced mine!!

Air Mail Tag: embossing folders!

 By Anna DÄ…browska

Hi there!
Today I want to share with you the project, which I made lately. I was playing with Embossing Folders and Distress Stains and Inks  - and I really like the final result: distressed, a bit vintage, textural tag. I think it is just perfect technique for more masculine projects - or maybe for those of you who are not fans of sweet and shabby look? Here is the final result of my experiments:)

As you can see there are a lot of details and the tag looks quite "busy" - it is all because of the layers of embossed papers I used. My choice were 2 sets of Embossing Folders: Sizzix Textured Impressions Embossing Folders 2PK - Clocks & Print Blocks Set and Sizzix Textured Impressions Embossing Folders 4PK - Mail Set
I took these folders to play:

First I've chosen the papers and embossed several pieces of patterned paper. I used light, vintage colors to make sure the embossing will be clearly visible.

The next step was playing with color. I love using Distress Stains in many ways - for painting, coloring, dripping, splashing... this time I dripped several  drops of Distress Stains on my crafting mat and just smeared it with my embossed paper.

Colors blended beautifully, coloring random areas of my embossed paper. Embossed elements absorbed more ink, so they became more visible.

My next step was drying the paper with heating tool and inking selected areas and edges of the paper with Distress Ink I used Ink blending tool for that - it is the most comfortable way ever!

After that  I had a nice set of papers ready to use on my project - to build layers, cut elements and details. I really love this distressed look  - it makes the project look really unique and interesting!

I hope you'll have a great creative weekend - have fun with embossing and die cutting:)
See you soon!

Layout "Fleur bleue"by Karine Cazenave-Tapie

Hello

For these new layout called "Fleur bleue" ( it means blue flower) , I wanted to realize a creation with a minimum : juste paper and a die.

I use Sizzix flowers by Tim Holtz

A really fantastic die ! You only need few sheets of papers to built your layout :) love it !

Material :

Kraft cardstock : American Crafts
Papers : Crate Paper
Alphabets : Studio Calico, Toga
Brads, buttons : American Crafts
Rub-ons : Studio Calico
Die cut : Crate Paper
Stickers : October Afternoon
Strass : Hero Arts
Stamps : Craft Origine
Ink : Versafine
Masking Tape : Scrap Tape
Die : Sizzix

I use several sheets of papers with my Big Shot.It 's a good means to use your little pieces of paper isn't it ?
Select four different patterned papers, choose contrast colors.

Select a neutral background like a brown, kraft or white cardstock.

Glue you small picture and compose your layout just around.
You don't need to think, you just need to glue flowers and leaves around you picture :)

I just complete my layout with stamps, butterflies rub-ons, brads, buttons and strass

A really feminine layout isn't it ?
