DIY Felt Cell Phone case

Hello, Everyone! It's Anna posting today.
Did you know that die-cutting felt with Bigz dies is easy and fast?! This week, I decided to make my new felt phone case, decorated with an amazing  flower shape.

It's so much fun to make! And here is the finish product:

Firstly cut two rectangles of felt to the size of your cell phone. Since they are all different, cut the pieces in the size of your phone + 1 cm all around.
Cut a strip of fabric and sew (using the zig zag stitch) in the high edges of the case.
Using the Bigz die Garden Flower cut out flowers, twig and circle from thin felt. Sew the elements on front case. I used the sewing machine, but you can sew by hand or use glue.
Finally, place the two pieces of felt casing, wrong sides together and sew around the edge leaving one end open to let you slip your phone out.

You can do this using colour combination of your choice. It’s also a perfect handmade gift for Christmas.

Thanks for stopping by.
Happy sewing!

Grazie alla Big Shot ho potuto decorarlo, proprio come piace a me.

Ciao!
Grazie per la visita :)

Prancing Deer Cushion

Die used: Prancing Deer

I've been using the Prancing Deer die recently for a project that I can't blog about just yet but I really love this die and so have carried on using it to make something that I can post about! It's such a classic, stylish deer shape and perfect for some Christmas crafting - I have a plan to make some paper and card deer bunting nearer to the festive season with one in the chain sporting a mini red pompom on it's nose. For now though I've been using it to make an appliqué patch to embellish a cushion cover.

Applying a piece of iron-on adhesive (fusible web) that is slightly larger overall than the deer to the reverse of the appliqué fabric

and then positioning the adhesive-backed area over the cutting area of the die and cutting with a Big Shot

results in one perfectly cut out deer.

I cut out a simple cushion front and peeled off the backing paper from the die-cut deer and pressed it in place in the bottom right-hand corner of the cushion front. Then, with a scrap of fabric pinned behind the deer to support the patch, I sewed an outline all around the inside edge of the deer sewing twice around the body but just once over the antlers (just carrying on past them on the second circuit).

It is quite an ornate shape but a perfectly stitched outline isn't required just one that will hold it in place securely, a sketchy outline looks really effective especially over the antlers.

Once the appliqué was done it was just a case of sewing an envelope back onto the cushion front and turning it the right way out. Voila!

I think this die is going to see a lot of use over the next 2-3 months.

Happy sewing!

Back to school - kit bag

It's the beginning of September and now suddenly it's back to school, and my granddaughter, Abi is starting school - so this week I'm making a little bag for her P.E. kit -

I have used 4 floral prints from the Little Bird Told Me fabric range from Lewis and Irene -
38cm x 30cms for the bag, and small pieces for the letters and flowers.
I fused web to the back of the fabrics for the letters and flowers before cutting them out - it makes it so much easier when stitching the shapes in place - no pins needed!
I used the Big Shot machine and the following dies to cut out the flowers and letters -
Flower, layers and leaves, by Dena Designs - 657690 -
http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657690/sizzix-bigz-die-flower-layers-leaves
for the capital  - Lollipop Shadow Capital letters - 657892
http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657892/sizzix-bigz-alphabet-set-4-dies-lollipop-shadow-capital-letters
and for the lower case letters - Lollipop Shadow Lower Case letters - 660112
http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660112/sizzix-bigz-alphabet-set-4-dies-lollipop-shadow-lowercase-letters
Remember when cutting out letters the fabric needs to be right side down on the die because the letters and cut in reverse.
The letters and flowers were fused into place one side of the bag -
I placed the letters about 12cm from the bottom edge, and 5cm in from the edge, but this doesn't have to be exact., and added the flowers underneath and to one side. I stitched all the letters and flowers in place as this bag may take quite a bit of hard use!.
To make the bag I folded it in half, right sides together and stitched the side and bottom - leaving a 2cm opening 2.5cm from the top -
and I used a zig-zag stitch to neaten the raw edges.
A 1cm fold was made around the top edge, onto the wrong side, and then folded over again 2 .5cm and stitched down -

The opening in the side seam allows a ribbon to be threaded through as a drawstring.
The bad is complete and can be turned right side out ready for use. If you like you can pull the ribbon through so that the knot is hidden inside.
I think I might have to make a new bag for her big sister - but that can wait until later.
Next week is a mystery.
Have fun stitching.

A cute Easter Basket

Happy Easter to everyone!  Today I come with a new cute project using  Sizzix dies and some applique idea. This  nice bag is perfect  for Spring time  and I  hope to enjoy it during next months.

Supplies
9"x 24" background fabric (similar to rustic cotton) and batting
7.5" diameter of a circle for background  and  same for lining fabric
4.5"x 24 " lining fabric
4.5"x 24 " fabric like background for lining ( both pieces sewn together)
scraps of green and yellow fabric
24" cotton lace
Fusible web
Dies
Big Shot

I have used a nice Brenda Walton die but you can use any bird die too like Sizzix Bigz Die - Birds
Before doing the cutting I ironed a fusible web on the wrong side of the fabric  and laying this side up

I love the new die by Eileen Hull with Leaves ,perfect for any project even patchwork.I ´m sure I will use a lot.
I cut out 14 big ( they will be double), 7 medium size and 7 small.
First I appliqué the medium  and small leaves  with green thread. Then I sew two big ones , right face together , turn out and finish with hidden stitches by hand.

Sew the big leaves  just in the middle , leaving something free, ironed the  three birds and appliqué.
Added the batting and sew all the pieces doing the bag.
Then I did the lining and finished the bag  with it as usual.I  added some cotton lace before.
Take a look to the pics.

I love so much this cute bag. It can be a cover pot for your flowers or as a treat bag or even for your keeping your sewing goodies!!.

Hope you are having a wonderful Easter Time and like this new project I have designed for Sizzix with dies. See you in two weeks!

Flower cushion for Mother

Last year my daughters bought me a beautiful cushion for Mothers Day - I loved it then and still love it now - and the grandchildren aren't allowed near it!!
So this year I thought I'd make one as a gift for my mother in law  -

I've used 1/2m natural coloured linen for the cushion cover -
for the cushion front cut 1 x 17" square, for the cushion backs cut 2 x 13 1/2" x 17"
For the flowers I used small pieces of blue, green, yellow and coral plain cottons to which I fused web - (like Heat'n'Bond, Steam a Seam, Bondaweb) to the wrong side before I cut the shapes.
I used Bigz Die 657117, http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657117/sizzix-bigz-die-flower-petal-power , to cut 6 petal in green and 6 in blue, and 1 centre in green and 1 in yellow
and Bigz Die 657114, http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657114/sizzix-bigz-die-flower-layers-9 , to cut the flowers, 1large and 1 small in yellow and coral.
Arrange the flowers quite high on the cushion front, so that there is room for the stitched stems and leaves, and I appliqued the flowers using a straight machine stitch, but you could use a zig zag stitch or hand stitch with back stitch or blanket stitch. For my stems and leaves I used a triple stitch on my sewing machine, but you could use stem stitch, back stitch or chain stitch, if you choose to stitch by hand.

The back of the cushion cover is made in 2 pieces, each with a 2" double fold along one long edge. Stitch buttonholes along the middle of one double fold, and then stitch the buttons on the other double fold - to match the buttonholes.

Do the buttons up and then lay the cushion front and back right sides together. Pin around all 4 sides and then stitch, with a 1/2" seam. I neatened the raw edges with a zig zag machine stitch.
Undo the buttons and then turn the cushion cover the right way out .
I think this is lovely for a gift for Mothers Day - I might even make one for myself!
Now progress on the baby quilts hit a stop sign at the weekend because I wasn't well - but I'm taking them to Glasgow with me - hoping that I can sew in my hotel room, in the evenings, after the show each day! Well let's wait until next week to see if that happened.
Enjoy the early spring sunshine and keep sewing!

Cutting freeze paper for appliqué with Sizzix dies

Hi everyone! Today I come with a new idea. I have been using Sizzix dies for doing some applique in a different way, using cutting out freezer paper.
You have been some of my work  sewing some stitches with my machine on the piece that I want to appliqué on the fabric.
This time I wanted to use my beautiful Liberty fabric I bought from London last summer and I wanted something more delicate and with a  linen background.
And here it is ,  a nice flower  with stems thanks to Nel Whatmore  die that was waiting for me to use.

Here I go with the steps if you want to try it.
First cut out the freezer paper  with Polly Doodle die. There are different petals so I liked this one. You can try other combination if you prefer.

Ironed the freezer paper on the wrong side of the fabric, exactly on some of the nice flowers in the fabric.

Cut out with my scissors leaving something  around the templates and used my iron.

Peeled the paper and used some glue like Sewline  to stick  the  outside stitching edge, especially with small pieces or points in the petals.
Pinned and appliquéd with hidden stitches by hand.

I have a pair of ideas to finish my work......but you  will see  later when I sew the rest and do some quilting.
I hope you enjoy this technique and how you can use Sizzix dies.Remember you can use the templates with freezer paper again!
Happy weekend and  I see you in two weeks.

........................................................************************...........................................................
