Fireflies and puzzles

Hello again - it seems like more than a week ago that I was writing my blog - maybe it's because of the Easter holidays. anyway I'm here again and this week I thought I'd make 2 blocks - so we have Old Maids puzzle first, followed by Fireflies.
Old Maids puzzle uses dies 657607 - square, 657611 and 657613 - half square triangles and the Big Shot machine.
I've used 3 different fabrics for this -

With the darkest and die 657613 I cut 2 triangles, with die 657611 I cut 4 triangles and with die 657607 I cut 4 squares.
With the medium fabric I cut 2 triangles using die 657613.
Finally with the lightest fabric I cut 4 triangles using die 657611.
To make the block I joined the large triangles together and then the small triangles.
Then join the pieced squares to the squares.

Join these pieces together.

Join the pieced squares together as in the picture below.

Finally join the two pieces together to complete the block.

Now for the Fireflies.
I used the same square and triangle dies and the Big Shot.
This time I used  4 fabrics -

Using die 657611 I cut 4 dark,10 light and 2 medium light triangles.
With die 657613 I cut cut 2 medium triangles.
Finally with die 657607 I cut 2 dark and 2 medium light squares.

Join the 4 dark triangles to 4 medium light triangles, and 2 light triangles to 2 medium light triangles.

Join the pieced squares to the dark squares as in the picture below, (you will have 2 of each)

Join the two pieces together, to make a square, repeat with the other pieces.
Join a triangle to pieced square as in the picture below - ( make 2 )

Join another triangle to the piece to make a large triangle - ( make 2 )

Join this pieced triangle to the large triangle triangle -

and then join this square to the other pieced square - see picture below - ( make 2 )
Finally join the two pieces together to complete the block.

Well I hope you like these two blocks - we're now half way through making our 20 blocks for the quilt, and if we make at least 2 each for the next few weeks we'll soon be putting it all together - and by then if the spring has come maybe it could be used as a picnic blanket.
Meanwhile- I'm off the make a cup of tea.
Enjoy your week whatever the weather.
Angela

Summerlike cards with Janna Werner.

Hello everyone, this is Janna. Maybe you remember the Shabby Chic cards that I shared two weeks ago. I really liked them a lot so I decided to create similar cards, but this time I chose summerlike colors.

Material list:
655268 Sizzix Big Shot machine
657691 Sizzix Bigz Die - Heart, Stem & Leaves
658613 Sizzix Framelits Die Set - Wrappers, Circle
657188 Sizzix Bigz Die - Tiny Tabs & Tags
657721 Sizzix Bigz Die -  Borders & Hydrangeas
657846 Sizzix Texture Fades Embossing Folders - Bubble & Honey Comb
cardstock: Tchibo, American Crafts
paper: Tchibo
rhinestones: Kaisercraft
brads: Stampin´Up
other: sewing machine, yarn, glue

I cut two hearts with the Bigz Die - Heart, Stem & Leaves and two circles with the Framelits Die Set - Wrappers, Circle. The small circles and borders were cut with the Bigz Die -  Borders & Hydrangeas. I used the Texture Fades Embossing Folders - Bubble on one of the hearts and sewed on top of them, as well as on the circles. I also sewed without yarn, this adds a bit more texture and details to the card.

Have a great and crafty day, everyone!
Janna

655268 Sizzix Big Shot machine
657691 Sizzix Bigz Die - Heart, Stem & Leaves
658613 Sizzix Framelits Die Set - Wrappers, Circle
657188 Sizzix Bigz Die - Tiny Tabs & Tags
657721 Sizzix Bigz Die -  Borders & Hydrangeas
657846 Sizzix Texture Fades Embossing Folders - Bubble & Honey Comb
Cardstock: Tchibo, American Crafts
Papier: Tchibo
Rhinestones: Kaisercraft
Brads: Stampin´Up

Mini album Paris

Hi everyone!

Let me show you today a mini album that I will teach in a few days at Version Scrap, the French scrapbooking exhibition event.

The theme of this mini book is Paris, our beautiful capital city. A good opportunity to put the emphasis on monuments, bridges, districts or to talk about a family walk. A retro style atmosphere with a touch of vintage with loads of details. This album looks like a paperback 9x14 cms with an asymmetric structure which will allow the insertion of a great number of pictures and details.

List of dies:

655268 Big Shot Sizzix Big Shot Machine
658556 Sizzix Bigz die -Fleur de Lis & Eiffel Tower
658577  Sizzix Texture Fades embossing folders 2PK-Eiffel Tower & French Script Set

Supply list:
Covers, papers, tags, alphabet, stickers: 7Gypsies
Versafine inks: black, sepia, red
Adirondack inks: Red Pepper, Sunshine Yellow, Slate
Distress ink: Vintage Photo
Stamps: Aladine, Florilèges Design, Hero Arts, Craft Origine
Others: tags, Bristol, note paper

This album was the perfect opportunity to use the following dies: an Eiffel Tower and a Lily flower.
I also used two embossing folders on Paris theme. These elements are cut out of white Bristol paper then reworked with inks. The Eiffel Tower template will also be used as a stencil.

Once I’ve cut the patterns with my Big Shot, I stamped them with a large text stamp from Florilèges Design using red or sepia Versafine inks. The lily flower is cut in half and each part will be used as an accent on two different pages.

Let me show you then how easy it is to use your Eiffel Tower template as a stencil: grab a cut’n dry foam piece and your Vintage Photo Distress ink, and colour inside the template making small circular moves. Then all you have to do is outline the edges with a thin-tipped black pen.

The technique on how to use the embossing folders is really simple and playful! Put a rectangular piece of white Bristol paper in the embossing folder then use your Big Shot as usual. You obtain two embossed rectangles which you can shade with cut’n dry and dyes ink (Distress & Adirondack) for a custom-made background.

Here are some of my mini album pages where you can see the Sizzix dies.

See you soon,

Thanks so much,

Karine

655268 Big Shot Sizzix Big Shot Machine
658556 Sizzix Bigz die -Fleur de Lis &Eiffel Tower
658577  Sizzix Texture Fades embossing folders 2PK-Eiffel Tower & French Script Set

Matériel :

Couvertures, papiers, tags, alphabet, autocollants : 7Gypsies
Encres Versafine : noire, sépia, rouge
Encres Adirondack : Red Pepper, Sunshine Yellow, Slate
Encres Distress : Vintage Photo
Tampons : Aladine, Florilèges Design, Hero Arts, Craft Origine
Divers : tags, bristol, papier musique

Merci

Karine

Ahoy Matey!

Next week my Nephew Josh will be celebrating his fourth Birthday and like many four year old boys he is actually a blood thirsty pirate, the scourge of the Caribbean who only goes to school on his days off!

With that in mind I created a birthday card using some plain card stock a set of circle Framelits dies (Circles #2 by Paula Pascual - 658684) and a pair of scissors, Here's how I got on!

I love working with circle dies, they are so versatile and with a few simple techniques you can get some wicked results. If you want to find out more follow this link and look at the simple shapes section.

I started by cutting out the circles to make the bandanna  head and ear, I cut the red and white circles roughly in half and used strips of the white semi circle to decorate the red semi circle.

To make an earring I cut a small silver circle and placed a smaller Framelits die onto the circle to cut an offset aperture, snip through the top and attach to the ear. Next, I die cut a black circle, folded it in half and used a pair of scissors to cut two semi circles, these will eventually form a very sinister moustache!

To make the eye I cut two different sized circles one black and one white, attached them together and cut them in half. To make the eye patch, I cut a black circle and trimmed away the top before attaching to a strip of black card. For the pirates Bandanna knot and nose I die cut a red and cream circle and then re-cut them with the same dies to create the leaf shapes.

Now its time to assemble the pirate. I began by gently curling the nose and Moustache and attaching with PVA. The eye was attached with a 3D foam pad followed by the eye patch. Finally I used another 3D foam pad to attach the ear to the head.

The 'Cap'n Joshua' poster was created using my PC and printer, after trimming to size I used my scissors to make it look old and care worn in a pirate styley! The base card was made from wood effect card from the My Mind's Eye Miss Caroline Collection and I used a craft knife to trim the edges to imitate rough boards.

TOO MUCH FUN! I'm sure you'll agree?

Gift Tag

Hi all!

Today I would like to show you a gift tag.

1. Cut a tag from cardstock. Cut washer border from any cardstock. Use this border as a stencil with green spray. Then use yellow spray.

2. Cut Card Edges and glue them onto the tag. Also glue decorative tape, laces, grid, resist canvas, flowers and etc.

3. Use spray to make your tag organic whole. I used green, yellow and blue sprays. Take acrylic paints and smeared finger some of your elements. Your tag is ready.

Have a nice day

slow and steady wins the race

Happy Easter!I hope all of you that celebrate had a relaxing weekend, and if you're lucky enough to have a day off today, have a wonderful Easter Monday too!

I've been making some very slow progress on the grandmother's flower garden blocks I started last week. Like I mentioned before, this is a long term project, and I'm just picking it up as and when I can. I'm not preparing all my fabrics and pieces beforehand, because as I go along my choices may change, and it seems silly to cut everything out now and have to store the cut fabrics safely.

This is where I'm at as of today.

2 flowers have been made, and another few flowers are prepped. As I'm away at a quilt show with Sizzix this coming weekend I hope to make a little more progress on an evening in either the hotel bar or my room. If I want to go queen bed sized I'll probably need around 100 of these flowers. Yikes!!! That 1.25" hexagon die is going to get a lot of use!

slow and steady

I had some other english paper pieced blocks that I designed for a class I'm doing later this summer, and I'm using my big shot to cut some of the borders.

I like to use the big shot this way - incorporating all kinds of technique into one project. The big shot is just one tool in my arsenal of quilting supplies, you don't have to use it for the whole project, but it certainly helps speed things up when you do use it.

I've used templates and scissors to cut out the english paper pieced centres, rotary cutter and ruler for the background and the first border, and now the second border will be half square triangles cut using the 2.5" HST die

half square triangle prep

These little triangles just need piecing into HST blocks and adding to the quilt top below. Then I'll consider the next border. I'm not planning much further than a border ahead, and taking things quite organically - hoping that as the quilt progresses it'll almost tell me what it wants next. It's great fun looking through my dies and finding ones that will work.

border 1 - on

If you live near Exeter then I hope you can make a visit to the Spring Quilt Festival this coming Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I'll be on the cotton patch stand, so if you do come by make sure you say hi!

Flip-its easel card

This weekend I have been playing with some Flip-its dies and they are so much fun! This time I combined the Majestic Flip-its die from Stephanie Barnard with the Bunch of Flowers Thinlits set from Paula Pascual, what a great combination!

Supply list:

When I was putting all together I came up with the idea of "flipping" the flip-its card and I turned it verticaly to create an easel card. Here you have a view of the card closed.

And here is a picture of the easel-flip-its card in action. Isn't it cute? I love how it turned out!

Happy Monday!
..............................
Este fin de semana he estado jugando con algunos de los troqueles Flip-its. ¡La verdad es que son muy divertidos! Esta vez he combinado el Majestic Flip-its de Stephanie Barnard con el set de Thinlits Bunch of Flowers de Paula Pascual ¡Qué gran combinación!

Materiales:

¡Feliz lunes!
