Mad as a Hatter!

Opinions vary but I'm not mad... not yet! nor am I a hatter (or milliner to be more precise). This week however I find myself strangely drawn back towards Stephanie Ackerman's range of dies. You may remember that I featured some of her beautiful embossing folders a couple of weeks back.

The flower dies in the collection are big, bold and contemporary in style. I could make a card or a layout but these dies are perfect for fabrics, more specifically felt.

The Bigz die I used is called Flower #5 and is one of several dies in the collection which work equally as well with paper as it does with felt, cotton, denim, hessian, voile.... you get the picture!

I popped down to the shops and bought myself a cute pink ladies bowler style hat to decorate which is where the title comes in (I don't just make it up as I go along you know!)

I started by die-cutting 3 pink felt flowers, all in one pass through the machine, don't you just love Bigz dies. Next, I folded the flower in half and then half again. At this point you can secure it with a stitch or hot glue gun. I did this with all three flowers.
I picked up a bunch of stamen used in the creation of artificial flowers, please don't ask where I got them as I can't remember but I'm sure a quick web search will turn up a whole host of similar products! I took one from the bunch and threaded it through the centre of the flower and twisted the wire at the base before snipping it to size.
I next cut a 10 cm square of green felt, You could do this with a die but it doesn't have to be too accurate. I next cut the square in half on the diagonal which gave me two triangles. I folded them as shown below to create dimensional leaves which you could either tack at on end with a needle and thread or use a hot glue gun. I also made a smaller ivory leaf.
I inserted two of the flower into the hat brim and added the third in the centre before arranging the felt leaves as shown. Again, how you want to attach them I will leave up to you.

Now, a hat ain't a hat unless it's perched on someones head so last night I coerced my daughter Poppy into posing for the camera. It was wasn't really hard work, Anyone who has either been a 4 year old girl or has had a daughter will know that!

And here it is, If I made this from start to finish without having to stop to take pictures and using the glue gun instead of stitches, I could make it in about two minutes flat.

Ah! the power of die-cutting!

I was working at Alexander Palace or Ali Pali a it is affectionately known last weekend and I had the opportunity to catch up with lots of people I haven't seen for for a while. I also got to go out for a Pizza on Saturday night with two of my favourite people in the world, Ms Paula Pascual and Ms Patricia Villas Boas who is the distributor for Sizzix in Portugal both of whom are dear friends, it was so nice to catch up.

When I got into the show at 8am Saturday morning after a four hour drive from North Wales one of the first people I bumped into was Paul Reeve. Many of you will know his better half Ali who is a regular on Create & Craft she is a clever lady full of inspirational ideas, tips and techniques.

I was handed a packet which I have been looking forward to receiving for some time. One of the areas of Paul's business is creating a range of dimensional MDF kits, they are nothing short of fabulous and If you follow this link you will see what I mean.

The kit in question is a rack to house my Distress Inks which rose from the jumble of pre-cut pieces to the magnificent display rack you see before you on the right in about ten minutes, no tools, no glue and really easy to follow instructions too.

The kit also comes with a set of 48 Stickers which can be inked and labelled before attaching to your individual ink pads. I'm a happy bunny! thanks again to Ali and Paul.

Where have you been all my life!!!

Bright butterflies

Another week, another card. I don't know what it is that makes butterflies so great for cardmaking: their relatively simple shape, the multitude of colours you can make them in, the idea of their lightness or something fourth? Whatever the answer, I often find myself creating cards where butterflies play a role. This week is no exception.

My first step was to cut a piece of watercolour paper to a size that would fit in the butterf ly folder from the Textured Impressions Embossing Folders 2PK - Butterfly & Garden Set and run it throug my Big Shot.

Next up I used masking tape to attach the embossed piece of watercolour paper to a heavy piece of cardboard with the debossed side facing up. Then I drenched the entire paper with water and once it was good and wet I started adding colours to the debossed butterflies. Using Distress Inks and a lot of water I coloured in som of the butterflies in 4-5 different colours and the added a light touch of yellow or pink to the rest of the butterflies so they wouldn't be stark white against the coloured ones. It looks a hot mess while you work on it but don't give up - once you let it dry (or take a heat gun to it) it will sharpen up some and once you cut it into size and mount it on your card it looks gorgeous.

I like the fact that the colours bleed outside the lines of each butterfly - because you can still tell one butterfly from the other because of the debossing.

I needed to add a sentiment to my card and I decided to go with the Thinlits Die Set 12PK - Ornate Labels as a place for my sentiment to go. The set gives you the option to die cut various sizes and styles of labels and then layer them for a cool look.

Besides from the label with the sentiment, I tied a large black bow around the patterned paper and added some enamel dots in colours similar to the once I used to colour the butterflies. Everything was then mounted on pink cardstock and added to a black card base.

---o---

Hello from Belgium

Hello Sizzix followers. I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing team. I will be here every Tuesday with inspiration using the Sizzix products. My name is Lilith and I live in the South of Belgium. I am a language teacher and in my free time I love to scrapbook. I love creating layouts but also enjoy making mini books and the occasional card. I hope my work will inspire you. As today is my first day as a Sizzix blogger, I thought I'd show you some previous projects created with some of the sizzix dies and embossing folders.

One of my favourite dies is this doily that I used on the layout below. It is so pretty and dainty.

Another of my favourites is the 659436 :Sizzix Bigz Die - Garden Greens. If I could I'd add leaves to all my layouts.

See you next week with a new layout.

Today is officially the first day of autumn. Do you like this season? It si not my favorite, but I love all the new season coloring: orange, brown, yellow... I love these reach and warm colors :)

This weekend I have baked some cookies and I want do give some to a friend of mine, so I thought that the Owl Bag from Lory Whitlock is perfect for this purpose.

This little owl bag has been very easy and quick to put together. I love how you have everything you need to create this piece in a single Bigz Die.

Happy Monday!

Feliz lunes!

Happy mail, Snailmail, Penpals.

Hi, it's me Bente here today to show you a little of a fun 'new' thing I discovered from my eldest daughter. Yup, I'm sure you have heard about it before ; SNAILMAIL.
Admit it, for most of you it has an oldfashioned ring to it and you probably have not sent one for years. For the young people (and even slightly older :-) ) there is something cool and fun about snailmail. There are several clubs where you can connect with likeminded to correspond with eachother. -This is much like the old penpal-clubs I remember from my highschool days.

Here is the set I prepared and we are sending it off  to DD's friend Hillevi who's in London:

As you see we have not written the letter yet at this point, -maybe because we did not want it published all over the internet,...LOL!  Of course it looks alot cooler with the text in place, but at least the base for the letter is there.
One thing not to miss when you send a snailmail is the ever popular 'tuck in' -the little something that you add to the envelope to make it all more interesting. I have made a few 'bagatelles' with my Sizzix dies to tuck in as well as added some old book pages, doilies and some pretty flair buttons.

I started by cutting down the 12X12 paper to a good letter size. I misted it and added a strip of paper where I wanted the name to go. Hillevi is really into movies and all that stuff so I thought the filmstrip die was a good one to grab and the chipboards for the name was made with a Bigz alphabet. Then I added some black chalk to make them stand out more.
Take a look at those dainty little butterflies, die cut from an old book page. Those belong to one of Paula Pascual's new die sets. They are so precious!

Below is the birthday baner I made to tuck in and I will present it in a small vellum envelope. You can also see the cute frame made with one of the new awesome cool thinlits sets. I added a couple of those cut from different papers. The 'smile' and the couple cut from red cardtock in the main photo are also from one of the new thinlits sets.
These are all rather nice little 'gifts' for those who don't own a Big Shot machine (or other,... gasp!)

I actually made some decorative chipboard decorations using my frameworks dies.  The fact that you can cut 'almost anything' with them is one of the many easons to love the Bigz dies. These chippies have been painted with gesso and then  misted with Prima's new Color Bloom mists and I think they look really nice. Especially considering they were made from an empty box of dishwasher tablets :-D I think they have certainly come up in the world :-)

Another cute little something that I made is a small sign for her to hang somewhere in her room. I imagine it dangling from a key for a cupboard or a wardrobe.

I diecut the quote and backed it with different coloured papers. Then I added a red frame all around before glueing it to a piece of thin cardboard. I used a heavy embroidery needle to add the red and white bakers twine.

Gorgeous Sizzix products that I have used:

The papers I have used are from  Prima Marketing ledger paper pad.  Buttons are by Lemoncraft.

Thanks for dropping by! Maybe you'll jump on the snailmail train yourself soon! :-)

Hugs!

My vintage sewing machine cover

Hi everyone ! Do you remember I was working in a new project and I needed to finish  and I showed you here last summer ? Ok, finally it´s finished  and I looooooove it.
It´s incredible how tattered dies can be use  and how easy they are to enjoy in a quilting project.

I planned this cover for my loved Bernina some time ago. But as you know , some time projects have to wait for new ones. And this one waited  and waited and waited until at last I came back to it on summer.

Here it is the front of the cover with the lovely bird that I adore by Tim Holtz, so cute!!

And here it is the back. I can change the view when I want !!

My sewing accesories sewn before, like the very big  pincushion with the tuto , match perfectly as  it is my desire
If you want to see a video about how I did this quilting go to my post  Quilting leaves in my blog.

This cover has the size for a Bernina Aurora 440.  You must to take the size of your own machine.

SUPPLY LIST:

SIZZIX BIGZ DIE - TATTERED FLORALS

SIZZIX BIGZ DIE - TATTERED LEAVES
SIZZIX BIGZ DIE - CAGED BIRD
Fabrics from your selection for the bird, leaves and flowers
White fabric for the three pannels:
       21"x 12"- 2 pieces
       45.5 " x 9"- 1  long piece
Batting ( Same pieces and sizes than the  white fabric )
Fusible web
Quilting thread matched with the fabrics
58 " bias
piping or cord if you do it (two bias of 44" with piping)

First I started ironing  fusible web on the wrong side of the fabrics.
Then I cut with my old Big shot a lot of flowers, leaves and a bird.

Here it is how I  appliqued the flowers using my 20 foot and matching thread color with fabric.
I added the batting before as it is usual.

After quilting leaves I sew the three parts of the cover  and added a pipped edge around the cover.
I did by myself  with a bought bias and some  cotton cord.
Finally I sew more bias at the botton of the cover and finished with hidden stitched by hand.

I have to say this is the most lovely machine cover for my Aurora!!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!!

Materiales :

SIZZIX BIGZ DIE - TATTERED FLORALS

Romantic framed card

Hello everyone! Today is again my turn for sharing a Sizzix inspiration! This time it will be a card (again!). I'm in cardmaking mood recently, so I trying some new tools, dies, techniques, colors or tricks. My today's card is very feminine, sweet and romantic.

Besides the (obvious) flowers, I wanted to keep my style, so I created a few 3D layers. I used fantastic dies from Framelits Die Set 6PK - Enchanted, starting from cut out the card shape and then a few next layers. I have not used all the dies from this set, but I encourage you to try out all the decorative frames in one project, I bet it will be a real layered masterpiece! In addition to the use dies in frames shapes, I decided to use one of my favorite and most versatile (in my humble opinion) motifs - butterflies. I just love the butterflies from the Thinlits Die Set 2PK - Winged Beauties, they are so beautiful and delicate - perfect match for projects in the romantic style!

Below you can see the close-up on an additional butterfly wing, this time from the Thinlits Die Set 2PK - Heavenly. Absolutely fantastic dies, that already had the opportunity to recommend to you earlier. On both sides of my card you can see the banner elements, glued horizontally. I cut them with a Bigz Die - Pennants. Definitely this is one of the most versatile sets - with its help you can create not only hanging banners but also just such a small decorative elements.

****************************

Witajcie! Jestem w kartkowym nastroju ostatnio, zatem staram się spróbować różnych nowych technik, rozwiązań, trików, kolorów i oczywiście narzędzi, a szczególnie - wykrojników.
